About the Artist | |
![]() Although she had earned a degree in Fine Arts, Beth worked for several years in the graphic arts field. It was not until she and her husband, David, moved to Costa Rica in 1997 that she was able to devote all of her time to her true passion, drawing. Costa Rica, a beautiful country, stimulated her artistic instincts with its bountiful pallet of flora and fauna.
However, Beth fell in love with the butterflies, which flourished in abundance near their home at the edge of the rain forest. With nearly two thousand species in Costa Rica, there was an endless supply of subjects. On her daily morning walk through the jungle, accompanied by Negra and Chiquita (dogs she had adopted from the local Humane Society), her path often crossed that of the Morpho’s and the Caligo’s and in time she began referring to them as her “Guardian Angels”.
Motivated by her desire to accurately reproduce the genuine coloration of these beautiful creatures, she took every opportunity to observe and photograph butterflies both in their natural habitat and also during her frequent visits to Costa Rica’s numerous Butterfly Gardens. Additionally, Beth harvested her own larva and was able to observe and document the complete life cycle of her favorite species.
It was in Costa Rica that she developed her skill with ink and colored pencil, which is now her preferred medium and the medium used for all work shown on this site.
Beth’s work was displayed at many Butterfly Gardens, prominent hotels, and gift shops throughout Costa Rica. Now living in the States, she continues her drawing and has expanded her interests into more whimsical subject areas.
